BRING FILM BACK TO MARYLAND!
On June 23, 2010, former Governor Bob Erlich, Maryland casting director Pat Moran, along with representatives from the Screen Actors Guild, and local business owners held a conference on the importance of bringing the film industry back to Maryland.
Just a few years ago, before our current Governor Martin O'Mally took office, Maryland was ranked #5 in the country for film production. Hollywood knew that we had great talent, a fantastic crew, and almost every kind of location they could want for a film. "America in Miniature", as the state is called. Now, because of the cuts of tax packages to attract filmmakers to the state, we are currently ranked at #47 out of 51 states.
What Governor O'Mally doesn't understand is that the cuts that were made not only affected the more than 2400 Screen Actors Guild members in Maryland, it affected a LOT of businesses and workers. From hotels, security firms, restaurants, building contractors, electricians, caprenters, tourism, to local stores where the films were shooting. In the panel discussion on June 23rd, Bunny Gliman, owner of Bond Lumber stated that previously her company had approximately 1 million dollars per year generated by the film industry. Now, she's struggling to keep her company alive. The owner of a Maryland based security company, V.I.P. Security Unlimited, once had 124 people working for him. Now it's just him. All of his staff had to take jobs in other states. Our film crew, which has been ranked as top notch, now has to look for work elsewhere to make sure they make enough money to take care of their families.
Please watch the video below to see just how important it is to bring film back to Maryland and make it the thriving "Hollywood East" as it was once known to be.
